External wall insulation improves the energy efficiency of homes that were built with solid walls (i.e. those with no cavity). Many of these were built before the 1920s.
What Is external wall insulation?
Constructed to what are now described as “non-traditional” designs, such homes have walls made from a single solid layer of brick or stone. Lacking insulation, these walls allow heat to pass through very easily, making the buildings thermally inefficient and expensive to keep warm. However, their efficiency can be greatly improved by applying weatherproof insulation to the outside walls. This is what is meant by external wall insulation.
If you’re unsure whether your home has solid walls, don’t worry, we’re here to help and check its suitability.
What to expect
Scaffolding will be erected for installation, and the full process then typically takes around 4–6 weeks to complete. To enable the insulation to be installed, pre-adaptation works such as extending pipes, vents, or sills may also be required.
All materials used meet the latest UK fire safety and building regulation standards.
Benefits of external wall insulation
- Lower energy usage – insulation helps prevent heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer, leading to lower heating and cooling costs
- Improved appearance / protection – the insulation can help to refresh the look of your property. It will also act as a barrier against weather damage, protecting the underlying walls from rain and wind
- Increased comfort – insulation creates a more comfortable living environment by maintaining consistent temperatures, reducing drafts, and minimising temperature fluctuation
- Improved air quality – insulation can help seal air leaks and prevent the entry of pollutants, allergens, and dust, leading to better indoor air quality
- Moisture control – insulation can help to reduce condensation and damp, thus reducing the risk of mould growth
- Healthier living environment – by improving air quality and controlling moisture, insulation can contribute to a healthier living environment
- Increased property value – homes with high levels of insulation are often more attractive to buyers and can have a higher resale values

What will external wall insulation
make my property look like?
Installing external wall insulation can help to refresh the look of a property and can provide protection to the existing walls.
Typically, local authorities will allow works to proceed if the resulting finish is of a similar appearance to the original, or is in keeping with the properties in the local area. This is known as permitted development.
The exact appearance and finish will be discussed and confirmed with you prior to any works starting. We offer various render finishes and those proposed will be clearly outlined and agreed with you in advance.
